Super-mini F1 Fun Day Race Recap
I think everyone had a great time with the kart racing and for those of you who couldn't go, or were supposed to go but did a last second buck-buck-baaaah, here's a recap of the day's events:
- Teams ran two eight minute race heats, racing order selected by random drawing. Second race really saw laptimes come down for everybody - "getting in the groove"! First race was also the first race of the day at the track (cold tires).
- Fastest average lap time was in the second race by Tom "blue flag - bump resistant" Gonnella at 30.751 sec or a respectable 29.267 mph.
- Fastest lap time was turned in by Rick - 28.450 sec or a blistering 31.634 mph.
- Second fastest lap time - and also the fastest woman on the track - Andy at 28.748 sec for a hair-do wrecking 31.307 mph.
- Fastest overall team average for both races (and therefore today's champs) was set by Rich and Rob Minor of Minor Racing, 33.951 sec or 26.509 mph.
- Rich and Rob were presented with the coveted red Alfa Romeo ball caps and celebritory super-mini bottles of Asti-Spumanti. The American Indoor Karting track manager surprised us by also giving them AIK T-shirts!
- After race celebration took place at a near-by Mexican restaurant (hey - we just had Italian!)
Just a final note: Michael Tiefenback was on his way to the track with his son, unfortunately they were involved in an accident on an icy overpass. Fortunately, both are ok and he was driving his Suburban!
4 Comments:
Spun into a 180 by Mad Dog on the first lap, recovered, got in FRONT of the fat guy with better traction, then LET him by because I didn't want the club banned from the track, then was all over the fat guy like white on rice until they just blue flagged him every time he went by and still finished just .048 sec off. Do all the math you want - still fastest lap of the day and fastest overall average for both heats (by over a second).
And...I'm saving the good excuses up for when we race the BMW Club!

People paid even less attention to the yellow flag than you did to the blue, if there even was one - and I can't help you with your inconsistent lap times Juan Pablo! To win you must be consistently fast - just look at Michael Schumacher (the other guy with a German name driving Italian cars).
Ok, enough fun - can't make it today but good idea for someone to scope it out for next time. We need practice anyway so we don't embarass ourselves!

Tom, based on the lap times you mentioned it looks like the enduro is run on the 1/4 mile track instead of the 'super track'. Too, bad - the full track would be a lot more fun - even just a 100 laps on the 1/4 mi sounds like enough to make one dizzy! The lap times probably came down mostly due to the tires warming up - but make no mistake, these guys put in a lot of track time and if they keep out of traffic they can turn laps in the 25 1/2 - 26 1/2 sec range.
I have no idea how much practice it would take to get as good as these guys - but they are dead serious about kart racing. It would be great if we could set up a race challenging other car clubs - sort of a mini-F1 league, so we could race against average car enthusiasts like us. BTW, how many drivers were on these enduro teams? Did they all have the minimum 3 or was it all mixed? Anyway - I'm in!

I vote you team captain. I think Mike Griffin was up for Team Alfa, maybe Kent as well. How about a Saturday session? Maybe we could get on the track with some fast guys and learn some things.
