Giro de'Luge

Following the F1 breakfast where Michael finished an amazing second, some of the loyal Laid Back Hamburger and Club Sandwich for Breakfast Eaters departed on what became Il Giro de’Luge. Upon exiting the north end of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, the heavens opened up to the likes seen only by Noah and a few people indigenous to the tropical rain forests of Brazil.

There was a brief respite when we waited road side just off the Magruder Road exit from I-64 so Rich could catch up from his Minardi like pit stop. Then it was on to Yorktown via Magruder and Rte 17. A pass through the “New Yorktown” led us onto Colonial Parkway and a brief stop for some photo ops before boarding the Ferry to Scotland Pleasant Point.

As the ever observant Skip noted this was probably only the second time any of our Alfas have been on a boat ride. We lost Rich somewhere along the way. No doubt his Minardi powered Spider was no match for the rest of the field. The rain abated somewhat in time for the photo shoot and ferry crossing, but hit with a vengeance once again as we traversed Surry County.

A short stop along the road while an accident was cleared allowed Alex another quick smoke break and then we were off. The parata broke up at the Rte 10/17 split where Doc and I raced for honors for first to cross the James River Bridge. Doc won. It must have been due to the reduced drag from his shiny new gold paint job. The rest of the group merrily continued southward led by Alex’s unfailing sense of direction. I’m sure a tavern or two was pillaged in the process. Not unlike the Hun our Alex. I continued my quest back northwest via Rte 60 and decided to explore some rarely traversed roads near our new home in JCC. If you are out this way and have some time to kill I highly recommend Exit 231 to Croker. Turn left at the Citgo station onto Ware Creek Rd (606). The speed limit is 40 MPH and even in a Spider you won’t want to do much above that. The same goes for the next leg. At the end of Ware Creek turn right onto Holly Forks Rd (600). A left turn at the end onto Rte 273 will bring you back to I-64. As you pass Stonehouse on the left just prior to I-64 give me a wave or stop by for a brew. Ciao.
